The career of the French racing driver Didier Pironi was marked by his spirit and diversity and the numerous friendships which he made within the motor sport world.
Pironi leaves behind great acheivements having raced in 72 F1 events with Tyrrell, Ligier and Ferrari. In 1978 alongside Jean-Pierre Jaussaud in a Renault Alpine he wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
During rain in the 1982 German Grand Prix he smashes into the back of Alain Prosts car causing multiple fractures to both of his legs and never races again in F1.
The most striking friendship is the one that he maintained with Gilles Villeneuve whom he meets at Ferrari: competitors on the track and faithful friends in life until death separates them when Villeneuve who wants to take his revenge on his defeat of San Marin is killed during the qualifications of Grand Prix of Belgium in May 1982 by wanting to beat Pironi.
In 1986 after Pironi's racing driver's career is broken he moves to offshore powerboat racing. He is killed at the wheel of his boat the Colibri ("Hummingbird") in August 1987.
