AUSSIE ICON'S Included in recent deliveries are the winning cars of two iconic Australian Motorsport champions from different disciplines.
From Scalextric we have the 1975 Torana L34 Bathurst winner driven by Peter Brock and Brian Sampson. During Brocks racing career he won Bathurst nine times and the Australian Touring Car Championship three times.
After winning his first Australian Touring Car Championship in 1974 he was entitled to use the number one on his car, but to highlight the Victorian Government's .05 blood alcohol limit to the public, Brock adopted the number 05 for the balance of his long career.
In the F1 arena, Jack Brabham and Alan Jones are the only two Australians to have won the Formula One motor racing world championships.
Spanish manufacturer, Fly, have released the 1979 Williams FW07 German GP winning car driven by Alan Jones. This car from Frank Williams rebuilt F1 race team made its debut partway through the 1979 season and Jones won four of the remaining seven races of that season and went on to win the Formula One Championship in 1980.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? When we think of supercars, manufacturers like Ferrari,Porsche and Lamborghini instantly come to mind, and when turning it up a notch, McLaren and Bugatti may come to mind. We have to admit that when AutoArt released the newest supercar to their slot car range, the Koenigsegg CCX, we had no idea how to pronounce it.
Koenigsegg, a Swedish company founded in 1994, produced their first street legal car in 2002. To date they have manufactured 7 models and no more than 25 cars are built each year. The CCX (Competition Coupe X) has been produced since 2006 and was made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first test drive conducted by the company. In 1:1 this hand made car can go from 0 to 100kph in 3.3 seconds and if you are lucky enough to be in a position to purchase this supercar you will get some change from $1,000,000; if not AutoArt is offering you the 1:32 slot car version for $59.00.
SLOT CARS IN THE MEDIA There has certainly been a resurgence back to slot cars over the past decade or so and with this interest has come more media attention. Recently leading Sydney newspaper, Sydney Morning Herald, interviewed our Jim Berry and a feature was written in probably the most unexpected section of the paper - the Money section. It is also interesting to note that following the piece we received a barrage of calls by those who had rummaged through their attic looking to cash in on old treasures.
ANOTHER ARMCHAIR RACER The Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed is the most historic race meeting held annually in West Sussex, England. Included in the 2009 event was a display by Rowan Atkinson, a well known motoring enthusiast and a huge supporter of the event over many years.
Rowan Atkinson recreated an iconic scene from his TV show, Mr Bean. In the sketch, Mr Bean buys several items of large furniture and then realises they will not fit in his distinctive green and black Mini. Mr Bean then straps the armchair to the roof and drives home operating the car with a mop and some string.
This display highlighted two anniversaries of 2009.
The first being the 20th anniversary of the creation of Mr Bean.
The second being the 50th anniversary of the legendary British car, the Mini.
Two slot car manufacturers are producing Mini's to celebrate the Mini's special anniversary.
English company, Scalextric, has presented a model of the first ever Mini to roll off the production line 50 years ago.
Spanish company, SCX, has presented a model of the Authi Mini. The Authi Mini was manufactured in Spain during the late '60's and early 70's as a result of the Spanish Governments insistence on full local content.
Both models are presented in Limited Edition boxed sets. Full details are on the relevant car page.
