HISTORY
Allan Moffats win in a privateer Mustang at the non-championship Watkins Glen Manufacturers Challenge convinced Mercury competitions boss Fran Hernandez that Moffat was in the same league as Mark Donohue, Jerry Titus and Parnelli Jones.
Moffat successfully tested for Bud Moore Engineering who was contracted to run the Mercury team. Whilst the team cars where painted red and silver, Moffats cars where green and gold from his Australian background.
Moffat's retired after nine laps in his first race for the team at Modesto, California.
Next was Mission Bell 250 at Riverside where after a punctured oil cooler the car retired after 41 laps.
Next Las Vegas 350 with a little better result as he placed fourth after the harmonic balancer on the engine fell off after 76 laps.
The seasons final race at Kent 300 in Washington saw fifth place after the car lost its fan belt.
The Cougar racing effort was terminated and Bud Moore Engineering went back to NASCAR.
